Garden History through London's Parks

What is the course about?

Learn about plant hunters and their impact on gardens. Find out how famous public parks were created and discover some hidden gems along the way, discussing local history, architecture and current developments in Garden Design.

What will we cover?

The first session will take place onsite at City Lit. The tutor will introduce the course and provide some background information in preparation to the walking tours. For the following four sessions, we will meet at a different park location (all accessible by public transport).

Week 1: Introduction to the course onsite at City Lit. General introduction to Garden History.
Week 2: Hyde Park
Week 3: Green Park
Week 4: Regent’s Park
Week 5: King’s Cross Development.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Assess developments in Garden Design through history
- Explain the historical context which led to the popularisation of gardening as a leisure activity.
- Evaluate the socio-political and economic factors that influenced the design/development of gardens and parks
- Explore the relationship between technological developments, architecture and garden making.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

There are no particular skills needed, just an interest in learning about Garden History. You will need to be able to undertake a walking tour of up to 2 hours at a moderate pace, with several stopping points.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be an initial lecture/workshop to introduce the subject matter and the places where we will be walking. This will be followed by a series of walking tours focusing on the history of each Park and how it reflects the wider developments in Garden History. On each tour you will receive an information handout summarising key points. Students will be encouraged to ask questions on the walks and raise discussion points. No work is required outside of class although you will be directed to additional reading that you may wish to undertake.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no additional costs. All visits are free. You will need to wear comfortable walking shoes, appropriate clothing for the likely temperature outdoors, and an umbrella for days when the weather is less predictable and a bottle of water for refreshment. You may wish to bring a pen and notebook to take your own notes.
