What is the course about?

To enable students to discuss and learn about a variety of topics, to practise the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing and to revise grammar.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Advanced grammar to facilitate communication; German culture (films and radio reports); current affairs.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-use more complex sentence structures (word order, connectors, Infinitive + zu, etc.)

-gain more confidence using different tenses (past tenses, passive, conjunctive II)

-understand the gist of German radio and tv reports

-discuss current affairs and cultural aspects with improved fluency.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

European framework B2. Students should have studied German for at least four years, or have a rusty A-level, or an equivalent knowledge of the language.

It is also essential that you have knowledge of more complex grammar terminology such as: the subjunctive, the conditional, the dative, the accusative, subordinate clauses and conjunctions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Tim Matschak

Tim is a bi-lingual native of Nuremberg - or Nürnberg - Germany. After a varied career in higher education he left management to pursue his interest in languages and become a teacher of German and English. He also has an academic background in botany, biology and science communication. Outside work he speaks Spanish, goes to tap dancing classes, loves crosswords, debates, art, cooking, learning, reading novels in English, German and Spanish, and people! You might find him dancing at an open air concert, hiking in the mountains, jogging in the rain, teaching German to a lawyer or a group of 15. In his teaching his focus is always on the people in front of him and making their learning as enjoyable and productive as possible. He loves languages because they help people live life to the fullest.
