What is the course about?

To improve students' reading, listening and comprehension skills and to develop their ability to discuss a variety of topics at an advanced level.

What will we cover?

Contemporary issues (cultural, political, social) in the German-speaking countries; revision of aspects of grammar.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-feel more confident about reading newspapers & magazines and following news and current affairs programmes on video without prior language preparation

-improve skills in summarising news items and other short programmes

-improve discussion skills on a wide range of topics relating to Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have a good command of German, equivalent to at least A-level standard. European framework = C1/2
For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart at the start of the languages section of our course guide or on our website.
It is also essential that you have knowledge of more complex grammar terminology such as: the subjunctive, the conditional, the dative, the accusative, subordinate clauses and conjunctions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Always passionate about languages, Tatjana qualified as a secondary school teacher in her native Germany and taught English, French and German at secondary schools in Germany, France and England for several years. When covering a German evening class in adult education over 15 years ago, she was impressed by the students' motivation to learn foreign languages and has been teaching adults ever since. She still enjoys teaching languages to children and teenagers and the variety of working with students of all ages. In her free time, she loves travellling and spending time with friends and family.
