What is the course about?

To build on the sound knowledge of basic German already acquired by developing further the four skills of understanding, speaking, reading and writing, and by expanding vocabulary and language structures to enable students to build up their confidence and to deal with more complex situations.

As this is an intensive course, 2 hours of homework is essential.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Based on the course books Willkommen, units 10 to 12 and additional material supplied by the tutor.
Themes: clothing; giving presents; shopping; the weather; health; telephoning; understanding a cv; jobs and plans for the future; daily routine at work and home; past events and personal interests; general revision of material covered in previous modules.
Grammar: Direct and indirect objects; adjective endings indefinite article; personal pronouns in the dative; modal verbs; word order in sub-ordinate clauses (wenn, weil, obwohl, dass) and questions; prepositions; separable and reflective verbs; irregular verbs; adverbs of frequency; general revision of grammar covered in previous modules.

By the end of this course you should be able to...

-discuss and describe appropriate clothing and gifts

-make plans

-talk about holidays

-report about weather conditions

-discuss health issues and report aches and pains

-make a telephone call

-discuss German speaking countries and the German language

-talk about daily routines and express frequency of events.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for students who have either completed German beinners intensive: module 3&4 or who have studied German for at least one year for approximately two hours a week.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.
