What is the course about?

The dawn chorus is one of the most spectacular signs that spring is upon us and provides an opportunity to get to know and identify different bird songs. During this one-off online session we will explore the different bird songs of spring and share some top tips on how to resource tools and apps that can help you to undertake your own research, whether in the garden or when you are out and about on a Dawn Chorus or spring walk.

Why birds sing & bird behaviours
How to recognise common dawn chorus songbird species
Useful tools for the dawn chorus: appropriate books & apps to help you identify what you see and hear.

Understand the reason of the dawn chorus
Identify 3 common garden/city birds.
Resource tools to help you identify the dawn chorus.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a basic introductory course - anyone with a love of nature and/or an interest in the Dawn Chorus is welcome to join. A good standard of English and a willingness to engage respectfully and positively in any class discussions are the only requirements.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Online through a lecture, with opportunities for discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Ben Chapple

Ben has a Masters in biodiversity, evolution and conservation from University College London and is currently a PhD candidate with Imperial College London, focusing on the impacts of nature-based tourism on both people and wildlife in the context of climate change. Outside his research, Ben is a wildlife tour guide in the UK and beyond. At City Lit, Ben is excited to offer courses on local ecologies and habitats, so far offering courses on ornithology and wildlife more broadly in Rainham Marshes, Walthamstow Wetlands and Richmond Park.
