What is the course about?
We will how Christian and Muslim cultures co-existed between the years 1000 and 1204, focussing particularly on the Crusades. We will trace the development of the crusading movement and the participants’ motivation. Topics include: Why was the first crusade the only success story?; Muslim responses to the crusades; The Rise and fall of the Kingdom of Jerusalem; and Women and the Crusades. We will end with a study of the fall of Constantinople. Why did the Latin crusaders sack a Christian city?

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Explain why the First Crusade was successful
• Name the four crusader states established in the Levant and briefly outline their socio-economic structure
• Debate on why the kingdom of Jerusalem fell in 1187
• Critique Ralph Niger’s account of the role of women as regards crusading
• Describe the sack of Constantinople in 1204 and its consequences.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
No prior knowledge is necessary. However, a good standard of English is essential. A willingness to engage constructively in class discussions and debates is the only real requirement.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
There will be a PowerPoint presentation with a handout of contemporary sources for discussion. You will be encouraged to share your thoughts and ideas in a relaxed and friendly environment. Occasionally there will be homework reading with an accompanying worksheet of questions. This is not obligatory, but it will enhance your understanding and enjoyment of the course.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
