What is the course about?

This course will give an understanding of how to print by hand using monoprinting and relief printing techniques. It will be useful for those who wish to print at home without the use of expensive equipment or also as an introduction to printmaking for those who may want to continue to other courses.

What will we cover?

We will be looking at printing methods to easily create printed images by hand using monoprinting and relief printing methods and will include exploring various ways of printing in colour and monochrome. The course will focus on monoprinting (printing one off images) on the first day and relief printing (which may include using card, lino or found materials) techniques on the second day.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Understand how different papers and inks can be used to print by hand
  • Successfully make prints by hand using a variety of print methods
  • Use different printmaking methods to get line, tone & texture in your prints
  • Develop images by exploring colour printing techniques

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for all levels. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstrations, handouts and practical assignments, individual tutoring and group discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials are provided.
It is useful to bring in source material eg sketchbooks, drawings or photographs.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
