- Farewell Film NoirCourse start date: Thu 3 Feb 2022
Location on this date: KS - Keeley StreetFilm noir describes a strange new mood of cynicism, darkness and disenchantment in American films during and shortly after WW2. Suddenly there was an outburst of adult, artistic maturity by emigre directors inspired by Chandler and Cain’s pulp poetry. Billy Wilder’s corrosive Double Indemnity (1944) startled Hollywood with its expressionist, existential neorealism and was nearly banned. Its popular success led to Laura (1944), Farewell My Lovely (1944) and The Postman Aways Rings Twice (1946).
