  5. The Emergence of Barbarian Europe, 250-800 AD

    In 400 AD, the Roman Empire covered roughly the same area as it had in 100 AD. By 500 AD, all the Western Provinces of the Empire had been overrun by barbarians. Britain had vanished into a long darkness. Rome itself was ruled by a barbarian king. Over the next few centuries, there would be a fusion of Roman and barbarian culture, mediated and often imposed by the Roman Catholic Church. From this fusion, all the modern nation states of Western Europe date their emergence.
