What is the course about?

This course will introduce you to the the basics of jewellery making. You will learn the metalwork skills required to produce a silver ring or pendant with a bezel set semi-precious stone. If you finish your first brief ahead of time, you will have the opportunity to create additional rings, or add a sparkly stone in a tube setting. 

This course is suitable for complete beginners and those with some previous experience..

What will we cover?

• Cutting, filing, shaping, soldering and finishing silver.
• Bezel setting a round cabochon stone.*
• Quick students can make additional rings or add a sparkly stone in a tube setting.

*A bezel setting is also called a rub-over setting and a cabochon is a stone with a flat base and rounded top..

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Make a ring or pendant.
• Make a bezel setting.
• Apply basic jewellery making techniques.
• Apply good health and safety in the workshop.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for beginners and those with some previous experience.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations and hand-outs, and health and safety information. 

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The process will be shown step by step through group demo’s and you will have 1:1 guidance from your tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Silver and a gemstone (a cabochon is a stone with a flat base and rounded top) for this set project are included in the course. Additional materials can be purchased during the week and your tutor will show you exactly what to buy and where to buy it if you wish to do so. Keep in mind that jewellery suppliers keep office hours and are closed at the weekends.

If you have your own cabochon stones or ideas for jewellery designs then bring these with you to discuss with your tutor.

You are advised that sensible footwear must be worn in studio 308. For health and safety reasons, no sandals, open shoes & small pumps can be worn – even in hot weather..
