This course is an introduction to the practical and conceptual skills integral to the discipline of Comics and Graphic Novels. You will also be introduced to the key movements and styles which have shaped the evolution of this subject area.
The course will be taught in our dedicated Visual Communication studio which is equipped with macs and scanners, a range of Adobe software, drawing tablets, printers and a vast range of drawing and painting materials.
What will we cover?

The key elements of comics/graphic-novels: sequencing, panels, page-layout, captions, direct speech, sound effects - and how to use and manipulate them to tell stories.
Drawing, painting and mixed-media
Researching, developing and realising short comics / graphic-novels in response to a brief

The key movements and styles within the subject area
How to use tutor and peer feedback to evolve and improve your work

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for beginners.
English-language competency is required: you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You may need to take short written notes for your own use and take part in group discussions.

Michael Aubtin Madadi received an MA in Communication Design from Central Saint Martins, and a BA in Illustration at University of Westminster. As an animator his work has been shown across art institutions including Tate Modern, The National Gallery, and Channel 4 Television. As a comic artist he has spent 10 years living and working in Japan, published in Seirinkogeisha's alternative manga magazine 'AX'. A selection of these works were collected into his first anthology graphic novel 'Tokyo Undulation'. He is the winner of the 19th AX Manga Newcomer Award, and 2nd place winner of Kodansha's 4th Morning International Comic Competition.

Soph Wolfson is an illustrator, animator and educator with a love for visual storytelling. They have produced comics, infographics and illustrations for clients like The Guardian, Vice and Yale University Press. They also produce their own zines and graphic novels. Soph has a background in medical art and has frequently collaborated with scientists to tell visual stories about their work. They also run regular life drawing workshops and love to incorporate observational drawing into the process of creating imaginative and expressive artwork.
