Introduction to jewellery making

What is the course about?

Introduction to metal jewellery-making techniques such as texturing, soldering, and cutting out shapes in
sheet metal and twisting wire. We will explore how to create a ring to the correct finger size and how to add
decoration like a stone or a kinetic element. You will create at least one wearable piece of jewellery on this course.

What will we cover?

- Forging metal wire, drilling holes
- Soldering
- Impressing textures onto the surface of sheet metal
- Cutting outlines and internal shapes in sheet metal
- Finishing
- Measuring and ring sizing
- You will also be shown how to make a simple stone setting and set a semi precious stone

You will have a period of time to explore these techniques through personal work. If you have experience in jewellery, you can follow your own project, in consultation with the tutor.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Cut and form sheet metal and wire
- Anneal, texture and solder metal
- Make a personal piece of work using the skills you have learnt.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through demonstrations and examples of jewellery that show how these skills have been implemented. You will be given technical notes, and support and advice as to how your work can be developed.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All the basic tools and equipment you will need for this course are provided. City Lit will also provide some basic materials in reasonable quantities, such as base metals (copper, gilding metal, etc.) and other materials (paper,pens, etc.) chemicals (pickle, borax, etc.) and sundries (polishing compound, etc.).

You are advised that sensible footwear must be worn in studio 311. For heath and safety reasons, no sandals,open shoes & small pumps can be worn – even in hot weather.

You will need to provide your own metal if wishing to work in silver or on a large scale. Your tutor will be happy to advise.
