What is the course about?

In this short course, you will learn how to read and write letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

What will we cover?

We will focus on words that they already know and their meanings: seraphim, ts'vaot - the Sabaoth of the Latin mass - names like Malchisedek, Avraham and Sarah.

All the letters were originally pictograms, so we will look at those. We will also focus on the interpretations attached to the words' numerical value, because the letters can also be used as numbers.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • readsimple words written in the Bible
  • get an insight into the history of the Hebrew alphabet

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a taster course for complete beginners and does not require any previous knowledge.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

A practical session with guidance from the tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No additional costs or homework.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Biblical Hebrew level 1: module 1 next term.
