What is the course about?

To discover Irish literature.

What will we cover?

This course will cover a range of classic and contemporary short stories in the Irish language. During each session the group will discuss various aspects of a given story in terms of theme, plot, character, style, cultural context etc. We will also share our personal responses to the story in question.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- discover new works by authors you may not have considered reading before. You might want to do further reading of works by a writer we have discussed in class.
- have a greater ability to read and appreciate various Irish-language works of fiction, some more challenging than others.
- express your opinion clearly and take part in group discussions in Irish.
- focus on particular aspects of a work of fiction, on particular writing styles.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No special prior knowledge of Irish literature is required but an advanced level of spoken Irish is expected.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- an enthusiasm for reading a range of Irish texts, for discussing in Irish in large and small groups, where you will be expected to take an interest in the responses of the other students to the work discussed.
- a willingness and ability to do some reading and preparation outside the class.
- a commitment to acquiring and developing ways of understanding how the writer uses language to achieve effect.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

We will be using the collection, Gearrscéalta an Chéid, edited by Gearóid Denvir and Aisling Ní Dhonnchadha. You will have to purchase your own copy of this. Before the first lesson you will need to have read a short story (to be confirmed).
