I teach Spanish and Italian at City Lit and bring my enthusiasm for languages to every class. I have a PhD in Comparative Literature from Queen Mary University of London, an MSc in Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching from the University of Oxford, and I’m a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. As a speaker of Spanish, Italian, English, and French, I understand how mixing and connecting languages can make learning more natural – a concept called translanguaging that I use to help you feel confident from day one. My classes are collaborative spaces where everyone builds confidence through real conversation and practical skills. Whether you’re here to travel, study, work, or simply enjoy learning something new, you’ll find a welcoming group that embraces mistakes as part of the journey.

Roberto received an ‘Inspiring Tutor Award’ in 2024 from City Lit. As his students tell us: “Roberto’s sharp but gentle wit runs through all his teaching and his love of language and wordplay shines through in every lesson”. Roberto has published several volumes of poetry in Italian, and often travels to Italy to give readings around the country. His enthusiasm for literature is reflected in the literature courses he teaches for City Lit. In addition to his interest in languages and literature, he has done extensive personal study in areas such as Italian Baroque, 19th/20th century Italian art and history, and enjoys sharing his knowledge in class.
