What is the course about?

This course has slightly longer lesson times, so you can begin your Italian learning journey with more confidence, and hopefully feel inspired to explore Italy and all that it has to offer. The course will introduce new structures and vocabulary gradually. You will build up your confidence in all four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), with an emphasis on speaking and listening.

What will we cover?

Based on Chapters 1-4 of Nuovo Espresso 1 (Alma Edizioni - Italian version)

Topics: greetings; introductions; alphabet and spelling; numbers; the time; say how you are; the restaurant; leisure activities; likes and dislikes.

Grammar: the verbs to be, to have and to go; the formal and informal way of addressing someone; the present tense; forming negative sentences.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-greet people
-introduce yourself
-exchange personal information (name, nationality, job etc)
-tell the time
-order food at a restaurant
-talk about leisure activities
-express likes and dislikes.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Stage 1 module 1 course - no previous knowledge of Italian required.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This course offers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere which will enable you to learn at your own pace. Your tutor will use a range of teaching strategies to ensure that you gradually build up your confidence in speaking and listening. Throughout the course, you will receive learning tips on how to speak in groups more effectively and independently (without relying on your notes). You will practise listening to spoken language in ways that will maximise your understanding. There will be activities and advice to help you retain vocabulary.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Nuovo Espresso 1 (Alma Edizioni - libro di studente (student's book) - Italian version).

Note: you might not cover all the activities in the book during the course.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Italian beginners at a gentle pace: module 2, or a standard Italian beginners: module 2. Please enrol on the next module as soon as possible as spaces cannot be guaranteed.
