What is the course about?
This course continues from the Latin 4 lower: Module 2, aiming to improve your fluency in reading and translating Latin, and helping you to gain a greater knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.
What will we cover?
We shall be using the textbook Reading Latin. Reading will be combined with grammar instruction and exercises on grammatical points.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- demonstrate a solid knowledge of complex grammar
- read and translate Latin texts with fluency and confidence
- appreciate the themes, language and style of the texts read.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should have attended Latin 4 Module 2 at City Lit or have an equivalent knowledge. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course consists of translation, grammar instructions and grammar exercises with a high level of student interaction (individual, pair and group work). Students are expected to do the homework regularly, check the resources uploaded on Google Classroom and participate in oral classroom activities. Homework will require approx. 2-3 hours per week.

The textbook will continue to be “Reading Latin” by Peter Jones & Keith Sidwell, 2nd edition, Cambridge University Press, 2 volumes:
- Grammar and Exercises (ISBN 9781107632264)
- Text and Vocabulary’ (ISBN 9781107618701).
An e-book version can also be purchased.
Other texts may be confirmed by the tutor during the first session of the course.
