What is the course about?

The course is designed to deepen and extend your knowledge and appreciation of Latin authors in the original language, whilst also revising some grammar. It is suitable if you are progressing from adapted to unadapted Latin texts.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone can be used if you don't have a computer but please note the experience may be less optimal.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

We will be reading extracts from Ovid's Metamorphoses and Tacitus' Annals.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- read and translate unadapted Latin texts with confidence and enjoyment
- demonstrate an extensive knowledge of the authors’ vocabulary and style
- appreciate some of the themes and language used in the work
- demonstrate improved knowledge of Latin grammar
- demonstrate a thorough understanding of the world of ancient Rome.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have studied Latin for at approximately 5/6 years or have an equivalent advanced knowledge. As this course is taught in English, please read the outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course combines whole-class discussion work with pair and group work. Grammar instructions and exercises may also be given. Each week students will be assigned passages to prepare and translate at home prior to each class. Students are expected to do a couple of hours’ homework per week and participate in oral classroom activities.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

We will be using Reading Ovid by Peter Jones (CUP ISBN 978-0-521-61332-3 2007) and extracts from Tacitus’ Annals. For grammar we will be using Via Plana by P. Ruth Taylor-Briggs (Bristol Classical Text, ISBN 1-85399-612-2 – reprinted with amendments 2001);and also Latin Beyond GCSE by John Taylor (Bloomsbury, Revised edition 2017, ISBN: 978-1-4742-9983-1).

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Another Latin 5 class.

Judith has been teaching Classics (and other subjects) to both adults and children for over 10 years, and before that worked as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language, as a journalist, and in charities. She has taught at the Open University, Royal Holloway, and Birkbeck and is currently Head of Classics at a school in North London, and finds the similarities and difference sbetween adult and school education both challenging and fascinating. Having returned to formal education as a mature student herself, to pursue postgraduate work in Greek cultural and intellectual history, she has a strong commitment to continuing education. She has degrees from Oxford University and Royal Holloway, University of London and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Judith's love of ancient language, literature, philosophy, and archaeology arises from an overridng interest in ideas, and in the ways that we can learn about how people have thought in different times and places.
