What is the course about?

This is a practical course. We will work on exploring rhythm in performance, timing, spatial awareness and then entering into the worlds of mime and storytelling without speech, exploring the body as a tool. Working in improvisation and devised settings, creating your own work as an ensemble and individually towards certain themes and provocations.

What will we cover?

In this course we will cover topics of improvisation, mime technique, working as an ensemble, the art of play, storytelling without words and learning the key values of Lecoq Technique. We will explore physicality and the importance of the space and the performer within it. Using devised techniques and exploration through improvisation throughout the course. This will be a very hands on physical course.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Experience improvisational techniques and have confidence in improvisation.
• Indentify increased awareness of your body, rhythm and presence in performance.
• Perform certain mime exercises and have developed skills in you own mime technique.
• Attempt devising work and ensemble work with a greater knowledge of these styles.
• Apply Lecoq techniques, such as elements of neutral mask, storytelling without speech and creating performances with nothing but your body.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is open to anyone, regardless of skill level, but it will be a physical course. An open mind, cheeky curiosity, eagerness to explore and buckets of energy is always welcome. You will need to be able to follow & respond to verbal instructions, therefore understanding of English Language is essential. Please wear appropriate clothing (see below) and be ready to get stuck in!

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be solo, partner and group work. The classes build up gradually, starting with a warm up that prepares for and tunes into the theme of each session. This process (for the most part) does not require a ‘copy the teacher’ style of learning, instead you are asked to physically engage with and explore given instructions to find a deeper connection to your body, which in turn will act as a base for communication in pair and small group work.

HEALTH CHECK
You will be asked to participate in rigorous activity. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Wear comfortable appropriate clothing that allows for ease of movement. No shoes required, in fact bare foot moving is advised (slip-proof socks are permissible). As we engage in some contact work with other students it is essential to observe good personal hygiene and wear clean movement clothes to class.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
