What is the course about?

The myth: Vincent van Gogh was an impulsive painter working from his uncontrollable emotions.

The reality: Vincent van Gogh had a carefully cultivated knowledge of art history and a meticulous art practice that reflected that study.

This lecture attempts to dispel the myth of van Gogh’s uncontrolled impulse by looking at his sources and why he chose them. We look to his letters as well as his copies of historic art to better understand how he developed a unique, distinctive style that still captivates us today.
