What is the course about?

During this Saturday workshop, we will explore levels of medical knowledge and standards and types of care available in England between 1200 and 1500 CE.

What will we cover?

We begin by assessing the impact of the Ancient Greeks on medieval medicine and the importance of astrology in diagnosing and treating illness. We will also look at the spread of ‘hospitals’ and available medical treatments.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Explain the humeral theory and identify the associated four personality types
• Describe the purpose of a medieval hospital and who they were intended for
• Describe how astrology was used to make medical decisions
• Identify the process used to determine the mental capacity of men and women.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No prior knowledge is required. However, a good standard of reading, writing and speaking English is essential. You should also be willing to engage respectfullly and constructively in any class debates and discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

PowerPoint will be used to illustrate key points and we will be reading and discussing contemporary sources (in translation). You will be encouraged to share your thoughts and ideas in a relaxed and friendly environment. Occasionally reading outside the class will be encouraged with a worksheet to complete, but this is not obligatory.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no expenses other than note-taking materials. You are not expected to purchase any reading material.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

HHS06 'Death became a constant companion’: a history of epidemics from the Black Death to Covid (online eve).
