Course Code: VE249
Duration: 5 sessions (over 5 weeks)
What is the course about?
This course explores the personal and professional pursuit of Modern Calligraphy, a form of decorative handwriting inspired by traditional copperplate calligraphy but with a contemporary twist. This course will teach you how to create a cursive (flowing handwritten) writing style that is truly your own. You will use a flexible, pointed nib and ink to write elegant, flowing letterforms in different styles, sizes, and mediums. Across several weeks you will build a rapport with fellow enthusiastic students and an experienced calligraphy instructor, sharing your discoveries and improvements along the way. This course is about learning and creativity, but it is also about having fun and taking pleasure in the present moment. Over time you will develop your own modern calligraphy script that you can take beyond the classroom and build upon for whatever purpose you choose.
What will we cover?
You will begin with the basics such as learning how to use a flexible nib and penholder, creating a basic alphabet, and writing capital letterforms. Building upon these foundations you will then explore how to create your own style, incorporate flourishes, and write with different coloured inks.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Write a cohesive modern alphabet with a flexible nib
- Use different inks and papers
More advanced learners will be able to:
- Use a flexible nib to write longer pieces of text.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This class is suitable for complete beginners and improvers and accommodates both left and right-handers. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions in English to support demonstrations, read hand-outs, and understand health and safety information. Students will be invited to take part in group discussions, but participation is voluntary.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Group and individual demonstrations will be supported by discussions, visual references, and worksheets. You will mainly learn by doing. It would be beneficial if you could do some practise between sessions, however this is not essential. No preparation is required beforehand.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
For the first session please bring a pencil and a notebook. Some materials and tools are provided for use during the sessions but must be returned at the end of the session. If you have attended calligraphy classes in the past and previously purchased writing tools, then please bring these along. You will be able to try all suggested tools and materials during the course and the tutor will advise on best options for you. Direction will be provided in the first session on what to bring for future classes.
