What is the course about?

In this course, you will engage in debates and discussions on a range of contemporary themes and mediums. This course is designed for advanced Greek speakers who wish to enhance their fluency, critical thinking and argumentative skills through engaging and thought-provoking materials.

What will we cover?

The focus will be on discussing and debating various contemporary themes using different types of reading materials. Each week, we will explore one of the following:

- Newspaper Article: Current events, opinion pieces or cultural topics.

- Blog Post: Personal stories, travel experiences or lifestyle tips.

- Short Story: Classic and contemporary Greek literature.

- Song Lyrics: Popular Greek songs, both traditional and modern.

- Poem: Works by famous Greek poets.

- Essay: Analytical and reflective pieces on various subjects.

- Interview: Conversations with notable Greek figures.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Develop your vocabulary.

- Enhance your fluency and accuracy in speaking.

- Improve your listening and reading of Modern Greek.

- Strengthen your critical thinking and argumentative skills.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have studied Modern Greek for at least 5 years recently or have an equivalent knowledge of the language.

Courses at this level are equivalent to CEFR: B2.

Choose a level 4 course if you can:

  • understand authentic, long passages of some complexity (e.g., interviews, adverts, news broadcasts, etc),
  • participate in authentic conversation with native speakers using a good range of generally accurate language,
  • argue a viewpoint convincingly,
  • understand authentic texts with ease (e.g., articles from the press, literary extracts, etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and debates. A range of resources will be used to support your learning, including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material. Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

This course is based on the tutor’s own material.
