What is the course about?
This course aims to introduce you to the basic aspects of the Greek language and to enable you to take part in simple conversations. You'll learn the necessary vocabulary and grammar for basic communication, and you'll lay the groundwork for future learning.
- Alphabet & Pronunciation: De-code the Greek alphabet and discover the sounds of Modern Greek
- Basic Vocabulary: Build a strong foundation with essential words and phrases
- Grammar Fundamentals: Understand the structure of Greek sentences
- Conversational Skills: Practise speaking and listening in everyday situations
- Cultural Insights: Gain an insight into traditions and customs of the Greek-speaking world.
What will we cover?
Topics: introductions, greetings (formal and informal), basic personal details, family, languages, nationalities, using numbers in context.
Grammar: Introduction to the Greek alphabet, active verbs in present, nouns in nominative and accusative (singular), personal, pronouns, possessive pronouns.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- introduction to the Greek alphabet.
- read and write simple phrases in Greek.
- introduce yourself and talk about yourself.
- greet others formally and informally.
- ask for and give basic information about yourself (address, telephone number, family, profession, languages, nationalities)
- count from 1 to 10.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Suitable for complete beginners. Also suitable for students who have attended a short intensive course in Modern Greek or have a basic knowledge of the language but who would like to start again from the beginning, consolidate their initial learning and progress rapidly. You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of number for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, etc).
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material. Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.
Choose either an in-person course in central London or live online sessions.
