What is the course about?
Traditional Mongolian script, known as Hudum Mongol bichig, is a vertical writing system used for the Mongolian language. Developed in the early 13th century, it is characterized by its vertical unique flow and elegant curves. This script reflects Mongolia's rich cultural heritage and continues to be a symbol of national identity.
This course will introduce you to the history of Mongolian writing and allow you to practise writing this fascinating script.
What will we cover?

- intrduction to the form and format of the script
- practice writing using inks and brushes.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- understand how traditional Mongolian script is written
- understand about where traditional Mongolian script can be found today
- be able to produce some basic writing in the script.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a course for absolute beginners. No previous knowledge is assumed and all are welcome.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This is a practical and lively class. You'll be guided and supported in producing your own calligraphy.

Navcha is an international freelance Russian and Mongolian linguist and has had many prestigious assignments in Paris, Frankfurt, Brussels, The Hague and Dublin as well as in London and beyond Europe in the USA, Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand and Vietnam for institutions such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, UNDP and USAID. She was born in Mongolia but was educated entirely in Russian from primary school and has been living in London for 20 years and teaching at City Lit since 2011. Navcha uses the communicative approach to language teaching, privileging effective communication over strict formality. She has worked in the City Lit Language Department as Digital Leader pioneering Flipped Learning which encourages students to learn at their own pace whilst maximizing productivity in the classroom and thereby speeding up the learning process.
