What is the course about?

In this Nature Friday Late we will explore the biodiversity and habitats of the Temperate Rainforests of the UK - how they were, what remains of them in the UK, and the importance of their preservation today.

What will we cover?

• What are temperate forests?
• Where they were/are found
• Where we can find the remaining forests
• Their biodiversity and what species live there
• Why are temperate rainforests significant?
• The issues temperate rainforests face
• What we can do to help protect what’s left?

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Explain what a temperate forest is
• Evaluate the history and current status of the forests across the UK
• Identify which species can be found there
• Explain we can do to help protect them.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory session and suitable for complete beginners. An interest in nature and wildlife and a willingness to engage in group discussions in a supportive environment are the only requirements.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Interactive lecture - there will be a presentation by the tutor, plus basic group work. There is no set work outside of the class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No other costs. Please bring a pen/notepad/suitable device if you wish to take notes.

Chantal Woodun

Chantal, (B.Sc.Hons) is a Zoologist and volunteer London National Park City ranger. An avid hiker, she loves taking in the joys of our diverse natural world. With the UK being one of the most nature depleted countries in the world, she is passionate about educating others to take notice of, build connections with and enjoy nature and the environment that surrounds us, in particular, the biodiversity and varied habitats found in our cities and urban areas. A Shinrin Yoku practitioner, she has organised nature walks around London whilst also communicating the actions we can take to add value to both the natural world and our own lives.
