The purpose of this course is to increase your fluency in the Koine Greek of the New Testament and other writings of the Early Church. Our core text at the moment is John and a range of other materials supplied by the teacher and the other students.
What will we cover?
We shall we reading John and extracts from other books of both the Old and New Testament, together, as agreed, with extracts from the Greek Fathers. The course also includes some grammar revision. It also involves a discussion of the different theological meanings of what is read.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
read and analyse a range of materials from the Early Church in the original language;
demonstrate an extended knowledge of the grammatical features of Koine Greek.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should have a good knowledge of the main elements and structures of the Greek grammar. This is not a course for beginners. As it is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Whole class work; reading and translating original texts, tutor posing questions and answering questions raised by the students. General discussion on language, style, theme, background points etc. Students should if possible prepare a portion of the text before each class. About 20 minutes will be devoted to grammar revision. Homework: 2-3 hours per week.

Sean has been teaching Greek, Latin, and History for over thirty-five years. He has taught in England, America, Europe, and Asia, working with students of all ages and backgrounds. Despite all this, he remains as captivated by the Ancient World as when, aged seven, he first stumbled across a retelling of the Iliad and Odyssey. Alongside his teaching, he has published over forty books, including translations, textbooks, and historical fiction. He is, by general agreement, a rather good second-rate novelist — which is not a bad thing to be.
