This course is ideal for near beginners who have already taken an introductory Norwegian class or have some basic knowledge of the language. You’ll continue to expand your vocabulary and strengthen your understanding of essential grammar structures, while gaining more confidence in everyday communication.
In this course, you will:
Revisit and build on key topics such as familie (family), ferier (holidays), and daglige rutiner (daily routines)
Practice telling the time with phrases like Når begynner filmen? (When does the movie start?) and Den er kvart over sju (It’s 7:15)
Learn to talk about høytider og feiringer (celebrations and festivals), including påske (Easter) and 17. mai
Use more complex sentence structures and useful expressions like:
Jeg pleier å stå opp klokka sju. (I usually get up at seven.)
Vi skal reise til Norge i sommer. (We’re going to travel to Norway this summer.)
Kan du gjenta det, vær så snill? (Can you repeat that, please?)
This course will help you move beyond the basics and prepare you for more advanced conversations in Norwegian. It’s a great next step if you’re planning to continue learning norsk and want to feel more at ease using the language in real-life situations.
What will we cover?
You will learn vocabulary and revise basic Norwegian structures. Topics will include family, holidays, routines and telling the time and celebrations.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- talk about simple events in the past - talk simply about your routine - describe and talk about other people.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for near beginners. For continuing learners, this course follows on from our Norwegian Beginners: module 1 course.
Learners should have studied Norwegian actively in a classroom setting for at least 15 hours or have equivalent knowledge. You should be able to introduce yourself in Norwegian and handle a very basic interaction about the here-and-now.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course is based on the communicative approach:
- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Based on tutor's own material with supplementary material and activities from 'Colloquial Norwegian: A complete language course' by Margaret Hayford O’Leary and Torunn Andresen (2016, ISBN: 978-0-415-47037-7)
Students should bring a copy of this coursebook to the first session.
Eva is a native Norwegian and has been teaching Norwegian, drama and creative communication for many years, to both adults and children. She has a great passion for teaching and finds it hugely rewarding to see learners develop their skills and express themselves with growing confidence in a new language. “Learning a language is so much more than understanding the grammar and memorizing words - it is taking in and embracing a whole new culture, and it is an amazing privilege to be allowed to be part of this process as a teacher.” Eva is also an actor and writes stories for children and young people.
