What is the course about?

This course is for beginners to explore positive steps you can take to improve health and energy, through improving your nutrition. It will examine factors involved in a good diet, and ways to improve your wellbeing by making small changes in your diet. You will also obtain clarification on differing views of nutrition, explore meal planning, portion sizes, food related allergies, and much more. The class also provides an arena for discussing current ideas on controversial topics such as soya, antinutrients and probiotics.

What will we cover?

- The important factors involved in a healthy diet
- The reasons for the recommended number of portions of fruit and vegetables
- What role do antioxidants play in your nutrition?
- What can you eat to help overcome stress?
- Differing views of nutrition
- Benefits/negative effects of a variety of foods
- Common supplements and their uses
- Probiotics: Do they really work?
- The effects of caffeine, soya and aspartame
- Common allergies caused by certain foods
- Meal planning.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Obtain clarification on differing views of nutrition
Identify factors involved in developing a healthy diet
Recognise benefits/negative effects of a variety of foods
Gain an insight into the use of supplements
Gain clarification on the use of probiotics
Demonstrate basic meal planning.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is at an introductory level. You should be able to write lists, locate information using handouts, books, and the internet, listen and identify main points and participate in group discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through talk by tutor, discussion, and group work. Some handouts will be given, along with in-class worksheets. There is no work outside of class.
