What is the course about?
Second level study of Old English for those who already have some knowledge (e.g. completed Course I) and wish to study further.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
More detailed look at grammar, some dialectal material, palaeography, verse metre (possibly manuscript and epigraphic runes if time permits).
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- read and understand entries from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the writings of King Alfred
- be familiar with aspects of grammar and related topics.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is for those who have completed Old English Level 1 or have an equivalent basic understanding of Old English.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Demonstration, and individual and group tasks. No homework is set but suggestions for background or further reading outside the class will be made.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
No other direct costs but you may wish to buy some of the recommended texts.
