What is the course about?

Build on your previous painting experience by re-examining the way in which you apply paint, select appropriate tools and materials and create a dynamic network of marks and gestures to convey your subject. The projects will be contextualised by examining some aspects of contemporary practice. You will be encouraged to respond to the work produced in the class; alongside receiving critical feedback to help you apply new knowledge and discoveries into the way you plan and execute paintings.

What will we cover?

The course will explore the following areas and set projects will act as starting points for discovery:
- composition, scale and surface dynamics
- paint handling methods and technique from short gestural studies to multiple layers
- developing an intuitive logic as a painting unfolds and learn to use chance and accident as part of a painting process
- read more clearly the paint handling and surfaces of your own work and that of some contemporary artists
- pre-plan paintings in terms of technique and colour.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- use more flexible and varied approaches to your paint handling
- appraise your use of scale, mark and gesture in painting
- develop your appreciation of the working practice of some contemporary painters
- create a basis for developing a personal approach to painting.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

It is recommended that students have completed 'Painting 1' and 'Painting 2' or have gained equivalent experience.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Project briefs, handouts, presentations, practical work, individual and group tutoring, and group discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Paints and brushes etc. will be provided. If you wish to bring your own brushes, the tutor will encourage you to consider how best to use them to maximise their potential in your painting.

.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

There will be individual advice available at the end of the course.
You maybe able to progress onto the 'City Lit Fine Art course', 'Contemporary Painting Studio' or one of the other painting courses such as 'Ways into Abstraction' and 'Painting and Photography'.
