Percussion orchestra (for people with learning disabilities)

A class for students who have a recognised instrumental ability. Learn to play percussion instruments. Compose original music as a group. Listen and respond to group members. There are opportunities to perform your music to an audience throughout the year. This is a partnership class with the Royal Academy of Music. The group will be joined most weeks by students from the Royal Academy of Music.

What is the course about?

Playing percussion instruments and creating music in a group.

What will we cover?

Improve your existing instrumental skills
Listening to each other
Choose music to play as a group
Listening to music other people have made
Musical signs and signals
Getting ready to play a concert.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Play your instrument confidently and skilfully
Identify different instruments and their sounds accurately
Listen and respond to the other members of the group
Follow instructions from the conductor / leader
Remember your parts and play in front of an audience.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for people with learning disabilities, you will need a recognised ability in making music.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The tutor will demonstrate how to play, and you will work with other students to make up rhythms and sounds that
we will practise and build on each week. You will listen to recordings of different kinds of music and say what you
think and feel about it.
