What is the course about?

These are the third level of classes in our beginners' piano programme. They aim to continue developing your basic piano skills, music reading and listening skills. You need access to a full-sized (88 note and weighted) digital or acoustic piano for practice (and for lessons if choosing an online class). These classes take place in our digital piano labs with up to 15 students in each group. This course progresses to Piano/keyboards 1D.

What will we cover?

  • Continued work on co-ordination, playing hands together in similar and contrary motion
  • Reading and playing patterns and shapes in music
  • Identification of primary chords
  • Introduction to minor scales
  • Development of sight reading and rhythmic vocabulary
  • Recognising recurring fingering patterns in music (e.g. arpeggio shapes)
  • Recognise Key signatures of 1 flat or 1 sharp

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Play simple pieces hands together with confidence and fluency
  • Read simple key signatures
  • Play with legato and staccato articulation and variations in dynamics
  • Understand simple time signatures (2/4, 3/4, 4/4) and more varied rhythmic patterns such as quavers and dotted rhythms
  • Identify and play major and minor chords and melodies
  • Play 2 or more major scales and one minor scale, one hand at a time
  • Hear and correct mistakes in your own and others' playing.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have completed Piano/keyboards 1B, or equivalent. You must be able to play simple melodies with basic chordal accompaniment, follow basic rhythms, and read music notation in bass and treble clefs. If you already have experience of playing piano and/or reading music, please visit the City Lit Piano Department Page to help you choose the right level. You can also click here to access our preparation piece for Piano/keyboards 1C. If you need any further advice, please email music@citylit.ac.uk

You need to be able to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

All piano courses use Google Classroom to share materials and messages between classes, including homework tasks and additional learning materials.

You will learn through:

  • Tutor explanation and demonstration
  • Group playing and individual demonstration tasks

To make good progress, a regular practice routine is essential. It is expected that you are able to commit to a minimum of 20 minutes of practice 4-5 times per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Most of our beginners classes use Adult Piano Adventures, all-in-one piano course (Faber) Book 1, which you will need to purchase your own copy of. All of our tutors have different teaching styles, and occasionally choose to use different books. Please check the City Lit Piano Repertoire Books Page to make sure that you obtain the correct book for your class. If you are unsure, please contact the music department for further advice.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This course progresses to Piano/keyboards 1D. There are multiple iterations of this at different times throughout the week. If you don't feel ready to progress, you are welcome to repeat Piano/keyboards 1C. Please speak with your tutor if you need further advice.
