What is the course about?

Focusing on repertoire for two pianos, eight hands, participants will engage in collaborative playing, developing their ensemble skills while tackling music from across the breadth of the multi-piano repertoire. This course promises to be a fantastic introduction for pianists looking to develop their ensemble, sight-reading and aural skills. Guest lecturer: Nadia Lasserson.

- How to approach timing and rhythmic alignment across multiple pianists and instruments
- Achieving balanced dynamics and cohesive voice leading in multi-piano settings
- Coordinating changes in dynamics and articulation for a unified performance
- Developing interpretive skills and refining group performance through collaborative, guided rehearsal.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

By the end of the course, students will be able to confidently perform two-piano, eight-hand repertoire with precision and synchronisation, while balancing dynamics and texture within the ensemble. They will also develop effective communication and interpretation skills, collaborating with other pianists in group performances.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for intermediate to advanced pianists of minimum Grade 6 standard. Entry to this course is subject to an informal audition with either the course tutor or head of piano. Once accepted onto the course, you will be assigned to an ensemble by the tutor.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through guided rehearsals, participants will work on intricate four-hand arrangements with the tutor, refine their synchronisation, and learn effective strategies for ensemble dynamics. Each ensemble will be coached in front of the rest of the group, allowing for

Repertoire will be recommended by the tutor, with much expected to be available for free from IMSLP.
