What is the course about?

Pilates Barre joins the benefits of weight bearing exercise with the core and back strengthening work of traditional mat-based Pilates. All the same basic principles of mat Pilates practices are present, including alignment of the spine, breath awareness and centring using the core muscles. The difference is that the exercises are practised in standing using a ballet barre for support.

The standing aspect of Pilates Barre facilitates training and toning the muscles of the lower body. In particular, the stabiliser muscles of the legs, feet and ankles are all strengthened. Pelvic stability is enhanced through stronger gluteals. Balance skills and co-ordination skills are developed in movement sequences practised at the barre working with the legs in parallel and turned out placement.

Taking a whole body approach to training and movement, this course includes some exercises for the upper back and shoulder girdle. Spinal mobility and muscle flexibility are integrated in each class. It may be useful to note here that weight bearing exercise is beneficial to bone density.

What will we cover?

- Pilates based movement sequences performed in standing
- Training for core and postural muscles of the back and abdomen
- Strengthening of the muscles of the legs and hips
- Total body alignment and balance work
- Range of movement in the upper and lower body
- Shoulder girdle stability

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for beginners and those with some experience, adaptations and progressions will be offered as appropriate. The nature of the training in this course means that it places considerable emphasis on use of the joints in the lower body. Prospective students with joint conditions that affect the lower limbs should consult their medical practitioner or physiotherapist prior to enrolling on this course.
