What is the course about?

This intensive and focused course is for students with some observational drawing or painting experience, wanting to develop their skills in sustaining one portrait painting over 2 sessions.
The class will start with basic sketching in paint with the aim of developing a more complete painting. You will workfrom observation from portrait models who will hold the same pose over 2 sessions.

What will we cover?

Proportion
Rotation of the head
Methods for improving observational portrait painting
Tonal painting for portraits
Colour mixing in oil paint for portraits
Taking inspiration from traditional portrait artists.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Sustain a portrait painting by layering paint, modifying and refining the work.
- Utilise imporved skill and accuracy in observations of the structure of the head from a range of viewpoints
- Work with sensitivity towards light and shade on the portrait
- Make use of colour mixing, colour temperature, consistency and brush application.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Open to students with some basic drawing or painting experience.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn by practical demonstration, one to one tuition, tutor demonstrations and group discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic Painting and Drawing materials are provided, but you may want to bring a canvas or board to paint on.
Otherwise you can use primed paper that will be provided.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

A variety of portrait and or life classes at City Lit including Portraits 1 and 2
Year of Portrait and Figure or thefor more comitted students to progress on to Advanced Figure and Portrait
