What is the course about?
This course will help you deal with those situations where you may be asked to present or speak in an impromptu situation for example; a leaving drinks at work, a promotion or other celebration or a social event such as a surprise birthday party. You will gain credibility and attention through confidently presenting with very little time to prepare. At the start of the first class, students will be asked which scenarios they would like to focus on.
What will we cover?
Technique: Learn key vocal, breathing and delivery techniques that will help you to think on the spot whilst speaking.
Nerves: Learn to control the nerves that cause you to forget your message, your voice to quiver or your knees to shake.
Style: Different situations need different styles and tone. Learn a variety of styles and ways to deliver your message to fit any situation from a more formal work situation to a celebratory family occasion.
Message: Whatever the length or style of the speech, there are a few key tactics and formulas that can be used to put your message across.
Rapport : Learn how to create a connection with the audience that will help you to feel in control of the moment plus calm and confident.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Speak with confidence and assurance in any impromptu situation.
Be able to connect with the audience through your message
Ensure that the speech is delivered in a style that is befitting the occasion.
Present a two minute presentation with very little preparation time with gravitas, credibility and an authentic style and tone.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations,and take part in group discussion.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course will comprise of exercises and information on presentation tips and techniques. It will give attendees the opportunity to present either with their chosen theme or a suggested one and give the opportunity for feedback and evaluation.
As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Stephanie Lunn is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development, and has an MSc in Strategic HR from University of Hull and a Postgraduate Certificate in Coaching form Birkbeck. She was a UK and Global HR Director and Business Partner in media and professional services companies, including Fleishman-Hillard, Agency.Com; Yahoo!, Cake and MPC before founding BluJacket Human Resources Consultancy. She has been teaching presentation skills at City Lit for many years, returning in 2016 after a break to bring up her daughter.
