What is the course about?

This course is about providing you with some key skills for speaking more confidently to groups and to give you the opportunity to practise speaking in front of others in a range of situations. This course will be relevant to people wanting to develop their confidence speaking in different workplace settings including presentations, meetings and interviews. There will also be opportunities for you to practise speech techniques you might have learnt in the past.

What will we cover?

*What makes a good presentation?
*Public speaking fears and ways to manage them
*Identify communication strengths and weaknesses and strategies for managing stammering in public speaking situations
*The importance of verbal and non-verbal communication
*Opportunities to practise areas of your communication skills you wish to develop
*Taking part in a speaking circle.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

1. Identify key elements of an effective presentation and put them into practice
2. Gain greater confidence in making prepared and spontaneous presentations to small and large groups
3. Develop your confidence in communicating in meetings and interviews
4. Have the opportunity to practise speech techniques and strategies for managing stammering you’ve learnt in the past
5. Dare to be you when speaking to a group
6. Describe the causes of the common ‘fear of public speaking’ and apply this to self
7. Find strategies that help you to manage the fear of public speaking
8. Give and receive positive and constructive feedback
9. Practise effective non-verbal and verbal communication skills
10. Have a clear action plan to take the work forward.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for people who stammer and who've ideally done some kind of speech work. It may be you've done a course at City Lit or or a different kind of stammering therapy course. This course can still be relevant to you, regardless of the type of speech work you've completed so far. To access the course you will need to have an adequate level of English to:
- Express your opinions and feelings
- Follow discussions and make relevant contributions
- Make use of handouts with some assistance if necessary

If you are new to us, you need to have some advice on the course suitability. Please mail speechtherapy@citylit.ac.uk to arrange this.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is a highly practical course. You will learn about giving talks and presentations by direct experience of talking in front of a group in a positive non-judgemental environment. Handouts will be provided and opportunities for video feedback will be given.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

None.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can do a Stage 1 evening course or one of our intensive courses if you haven't attended one previously. Alternatively you can do any of our Stage 2 courses including other topic-based workshops.
