Please note this course is aimed at repairing jewellery made of precious metals. This course does not cover re-stringing, knotting or beading.

What is the course about?

This course will teach you invaluable knowledge and skills in basic jewellery repair and maintenance used in professional jewellery workshops. Whether you're repairing precious valuable pieces or extending the life of those with sentimental value, the experienced tutor will give you professional advice in replacing clasps, re-soldering, replacing stones, resizing and polishing scratched surfaces.

What will we cover?

- Replacing clasps
- Resizing
- Re-soldering precious metal jewellery, including jewellery with settings (depending on the stone)
- Securing loose stones
- Different ways of re-polishing scratched items
- The most suitable ways of cleaning different jewellery pieces.

By the end of this course you should be able to...

Repair your jewellery effectively, as well as demonstrate industry knowledge of how to clean it in order to extend the life of your favourite pieces.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for all levels - previous experience of jewellery-making or silver-smithing is beneficial but not essential. You will need to be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and be prepared to take part in group discussions. You should be happy using numbers and able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through practical demonstrations both to the group and to individuals. Group discussions and feedback are encouraged.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic materials are provided. You are encouraged to bring some broken jewellery along with you in order to further apply the skills that you will learn on this course. Please note that not all items brought in will be able to be repaired on this course.

You are advised that sensible footwear must be worn in the studio. For heath and safety reasons no sandals, open shoes or small pumps can be worn, even in hot weather.

Emilia Netto

Emilia Sutherland Netto is the designer and maker behind the jewellery brand Ember & Ore. Emilia has a BA Hons Contemporary Crafts degree from Plymouth College of Art. She has worked in the jewellery indiustry sinse 2012 in various manufacturing capacities and has taught jewellery making since 2013. More recently she has obtained two diplomas in CAD/CAM with an emphasis on jewellery manufacture.Emilia believes in using a mixture of modern and traditional manufacture and design techniques in order to achieve highly detailed and sculptural outcomes.
