What will we cover?
This is a practical translation course. You will translate a range of short texts e.g. news texts, opinion pieces, works of literature, film and book reviews, sports reports, blogposts etc. and discuss your work in class. The class will discuss their areas of interest in the first session.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- recognise a range of different writing styles in Russian and set about recreating them in English.- Interpret Russian texts with greater subtlety, and with enhanced knowledge of Russian-speaking cultures.
- Translate texts from English into Russian using correct vocabulary, syntax and grammar There may be other outcomes, depending on the needs and interests of the group of students (for example, we could discuss the use of different types of machine translation tools).
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Students should have at least a strong level B2 in Russian, be comfortable reading Russian news, fiction and non fiction texts and have a good knowledge of Russian language and culture. They must be able to write fluent, idiomatic English (native or near-native speaker, C1 English as an absolute minimum) and be willing to explore different registers and styles.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This is a practical, participative course in which students will be required to prepare translations for discussion in class. Homework will be set every week, which students should be willing and able to do in order to benefit fully from the course.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Anna has been working as a German, Russian and French language teacher since 2010 and has taught adults and children, both groups and individuals, from complete beginners to advanced learners. Anna thinks that enjoyment and motivation are the most important factors when learning a language, so she includes a lot of role play, conversation and real-life materials in her lessons. Languages are her main passion which she tries to communicate to her students. Anna also extensively works as a translator and editor. She has a significant experience in the development and editing of original teaching materials, as she has worked a lot in the field of educational publishing. Anna is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists and works as an examiner and presenter for this institution. Anna holds a Translator's Degree from the University of Heidelberg, a Master’s degree from ESCP (École Supérieure de Commerce de Paris), the Diploma in Translation IoLET and the CELTA qualification. Anna has a multicultural and multilingual background as she lived and worked in Germany, France, Russia and England for many years.
