What is the course about?
This course is based on the book “Russian through Art”, published by Routledge, and on the online material of the course book and other online sources.
During the course, students will learn about architecture in Russia, famous architects and architectural styles, popular in Russia in the 18th – 20th centuries, from the classical palaces of the Romanovs and the Russian nobility in St. Petersburg and Moscow and the buildings of the world-renowned Bolshoi and Mariinsky theatres to the avant-garde architecture of “constructivism” and the stylish sky-scrapers of Moscow-City.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.

What will we cover?
Students will discover the history and circumstances of constructing, destroying and rebuilding of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow, discuss the architectural details of Kazan and St. Isaac’s Cathedrals, Admiralty and other classical buildings in St. Petersburg. During the course the students will familiarise themselves with the examples of the ‘northern modern’ in St. Petersburg, the short-lived constructivism and the ambitious projects of ‘Stalin’s Empire’ in Moscow. The students will learn the names of Italian, French, Russian and Soviet architects, whose masterpieces deserve to remain forever in the annals of Russian and world architecture.

- talk about modern architecture in Russia

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Suitable if you have completed Russian at Level 3, or you are a confident learner at Level 3 or are studying Russian at Level 4 or above.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This course involves listening to and reading a lecture (available online), using video and audio files, discussions, there will be some task-based and project-based assignments.
Homework will be set every week, which students should be willing and able to do in order to benefit fully from the course.

The students are required to buy the course book “Russian through Art” by Anna S. Kudyma and Olga E. Kagan, published by Routledge ISBN 9781138400276. The course book can be bought either on Amazon as well as on the UCLA site https://ccle.ucla.edu/course/view/russart. Internet resources will be given either in the book or by the tutor.

Eugeniya is a Russian teacher who lived most of her life in Moscow. She holds a degree in language teaching from Moscow State University as well as a PGCE. She has also trained to be a language teacher at City Lit. Eugeniya has taught Russian at all levels in a wide range of institutions including secondary schools, London universities and various language centres and agencies. She enjoys teaching adults who need Russian for travelling, communicating with friends or who would like to learn about Russian history, politics and literature. Her passions are languages, literature, art, and travelling.
