What is the course about?

In this course you will build on your previous knowledge of Sanskrit by revising and generalising what you have learned so far, before advancing into new areas, with a view to gaining competence in reading and writing Sanskrit.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

We will read directly from the Mahabharata and Hitopadesha, with recourse to specific advanced grammar topics.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- enjoy a good grasp of verbal conjugation, noun declension, sandhi and rules of syntax;
- read, with assistance, directly from the Sanskrit texts;
- compose sophisticated sentences in Sanskrit.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You would either have completed Level 4 Module 2 at City Lit to enrol, or have a good understanding of the topics up to the level at which we will begin studying.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Classroom contact translating Sanskrit into English and vice versa. There will be between one to two hours per week of homework.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The course textbooks are 'A Sanskrit Reader' by Charles Rockwell Lanman and 'Introduction to Sanskrit: Part Two by Thomas Egenes. The grammar reference work is William Dwight Whitney's 'Sanskrit Grammar'.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can advance to the Sanskrit Reading Circle.
