What is the course about?

This lively workshop is for singers and actors with at least 3 years singing tuition who wish to further develop their vocal technique and performance skills in the Musical Theatre repertoire. The focus is on singing technique and acting through song. There are some opportunities for end-of-term presentations in semi-formal concert situations.
NB there is no break week on this course.

What will we cover?

- Physical and vocal exercises and guidance on technique.
- Voice work to gain the vocal qualities and musical styles for musical theatre
- How to broaden your individual repertoire
- Guidance on choosing suitable repertoire for your voice type
- Guidance on audition techniques and strategies
- Communicating with an audience
-Acting through song.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Perform the studied songs to a reasonable standard and from memory;
- Choose appropriate repertoire;
- Understand the varying vocal demands for different styles;
- Demonstrate a broadened approach and show a better vocal technique for this type of repertoire.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You need to have a relatively secure technique and be vocally confident enough to try new techniques/vocal exercises in front of other class members online.
You do not need to sight-read music, but you must be able to independently learn new repertoire on a regular basis, and be confident singing in front of the class therefore a general understanding of musical notation is required.
You need to be able to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
If you are new to City Lit singing classes, please take a moment to read our blog: Choosing a singing class at City lit which lists our full sequence of singing classes.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The class begins with a short vocal warm up and specific technical exercises with some group singing along with the tutor and individual presentations supported by a professional pianist. There will also be discussion arising out of work in progress and exchange of ideas.
There may be class songs chosen by the tutor but you will also be expected to choose your own repertoire from a specified period/topic focus. You will need to work on your repertoire at home and daily practice is essential for progress.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Notebook and pencil, sheet music as required (your tutor will advise in class). Music may be purchased new or second-hand and/or borrowed from local libraries; Westminster Music Library (Victoria) and the Barbican Music Library have very comprehensive collections.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may continue with Sing musical theatre workshop modules as long as you wish or you may like to explore other
Singing, Dance, or complementary classes such as Musicianship or Piano/keyboards to support your learning.
