What is the course about?

Este curso es para aquellos estudiantes que han estudiado unos cinco años de español y desean obtener un conocimiento más profundo de la lengua y cultura del mundo hispanohablante. En este módulo se leerá y exploraremos los principales cuentos de 'El llano en llamas' (1953) de Juan Rulfo, investigando su enfoque único de la narración de historias al tiempo que comprendemos su importancia social, política y cultural en su contexto histórico específico.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

We will explore Juan Rulfo’s short stories that show the diverse and complex cultural and social context they originate from.
We will read fragments from all the stories to discuss the way they expose their critical messages.
We will investigate literary perspectives addressing the social, political and literary aspects revolving around Rulfo’s particular obsessions.
Revision of different tenses (indicative and subjunctive).
Discussion of literary topics: culture, literature, Spanish/Latin American Short Stories.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Understand how this Latin American giant used its literary talent to portray unique aspects of its specific culture.
- Learn about classic literary masterpieces from Latin America.
- analyse literary language as a critical tool.
- be more confident in speaking Spanish
- express opinions and ideas by using a wider range of vocabulary
- extract specific information when listening to dialogues
- extract detailed information from essays, newspaper articles and literature contexts.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have completed 4/5 years of Spanish.

It is also essential that you have knowledge of more complex grammar terminology such as: conditional, indirect and direct pronouns, hypothetical sentences, subjunctive, subordinate clauses and more complex conjunctions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, reading and literary analysis. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Óscar Salgado Suárez

Dr. Óscar Salgado-Suárez teaches Spanish language and cultural courses at Birkbeck, University of London; Imperial College and City Lit. His cultural research interests are 20th and 21st Century Spanish and Latin American visual and literary representations with a focus on storytelling, affects and humour studies in relation to historiography, national identities and power formations.
