What is the course about?
To give students a general knowledge of Spanish and Latin American literature and history and to enable students to discuss literary texts in Spanish.
What will we cover?
We will cover different aspects of the chosen book such as historical and social background, characters and style.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- have a better knowledge of the author/s and his/her work
- place the text studied in its historical and cultural contexts
- feel more confident reading and speaking Spanish.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for students with an advanced level of Spanish. Students should also be able to read literary texts in Spanish and to participate in discussions in Spanish. How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Any Spanish 4/5 course in the summer and any Spanish level 5 in September. Please enrol on the next module as soon as possible as spaces cannot be guaranteed.
Dr. Óscar Salgado-Suárez teaches Spanish language and cultural courses at Birkbeck, University of London; Imperial College and City Lit. His cultural research interests are 20th and 21st Century Spanish and Latin American visual and literary representations with a focus on storytelling, affects and humour studies in relation to historiography, national identities and power formations.
