What is the course about?

Each lesson will be devoted to a particular artist who is representative of their time. This module of 5 lessons will cover 17th 18th century’s painting in Italy and focus on artists such as: Caravaggio, Artemisia Gentileschi, Carracci, Pietro Longhi, Giambattista Tiepolo.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Each session will be dedicated to an Italian painter who had an impact in the history
and evolution of Italian art. The historical and social context will be also analysed in
order to better understand each artist’s background, work and thinking. The sessions
are delivered in an interactive way, as the lecture is intertwined with themed-based
language activities and group discussions.

By the end of this course you should be able to...

By the end of this course students will have achieved some knowledge of the history of Italian
painting and improved their understanding of art while putting into practice their language
skills. Each lesson will be structured in an interactive way in order to enable students to use their
Italian in context and consolidate their language skills at the same time.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is delivered entirely in Italian, so you should have an upper intermediate to advanced level (City Lit levels 3 upper to 5).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The lessons will be led in an interactive way featuring group discussions, image reading and using authentic materials (texts, interviews, videos etc) to support learning and allow students to put into practice their language knowledge and skills.

Ottavia Castellina Tutor Website

Ottavia Castellina is an art historian, photographer and tutor. After gaining a degree in Art History at Turin University she completed an MA in Photography at the London College of Communication. Over the past years she has been teaching Italian, art history and photography both in Italy and in the UK, while her photographic work has been internationally exhibited and published. She currently works as a photography lecturer at Genoa University while organizing workshops and courses in a range of different contexts and institutions.
