What is the course about?

This one-day course will study the international Dada movement and the artists involved, as it challenged centuries of artistic tradition. We will consider it within the context of war and political instability, and in relation to the artistic experimentation of the contemporary avant-garde. Höch’s groundbreaking photomontages and social commentary will be a focus, alongside Duchamp, whose impact on the development of modern art is unquestionable. Through analysis of a number of his works we will chart his innovations, and what they meant for the future of art.

What will we cover?

• The Dada movement’s goals and its artistic, social, and political context.
• Marcel Duchamp’s relationship with the avant-garde, media experimentation, and challenge to tradition.
• Dada’s international activity, particularly German Dada, with focus on the work of Hannah Höch.
