What is the course about?

What will we cover?

On this lively and communicative-focussed course you will continue to develop your Swedish speaking skills.

We will discuss topics such as health and wellbeing, visiting the doctors, Swedish news and current affairs and Swedish work culture. Focus will be on helping students to express and talk about their own interests and opinions. Sources are contemporary and will include videos, news reports, blogs, works of literature and texts from a workbook.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- speak about illnesses and health in Swedish
- discuss news items and articles
- confidently navigate situations in which you don't understand without switching to English
- start to recognise the difference between careful/citation speech and casual/connected speech

You'll also have used the following points of grammar in context-situated conversations:

- Use time prepositions accurately when talking about events (en gång i månaden, två gånger om året).
- Use conjunctions (antingen…eller, inte..utan) when discussing and expressing opinions.
- Use reflexive verbs (tvätta sig, skilja sig) and pronouns (sig) confidently.
- Use correct word order in longer sentences (bisats + Huvudsats).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For continuing students: this course is the continuation of Swedish 3, module 3 (2024/2025) with Lisa Strid.

For new students: choose a level 3 upper course if you can:

- understand the main details of authentic conversations of moderate length and complexity (e.g., interviews, adverts, news)
- understand specific details and general information from routine telephone calls, follow routine instructions (e.g., for a game, recipe, using equipment or installing computer software)
- understand articles from the press or other authentic sources and produce a written summary covering the main points.
- negotiate a situation in which you don't understand without switching to English

Students should be able to hold a conversation about everyday situations to an intermediate standard, read everyday instructions in simple, everyday Swedish. They should also have a good knowledge of present, simple past and future tenses.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun, subject and object.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please contact the Non-Romance Languages Department via email for information on any coursebooks you may need for this course.

Other materials will be provided by the tutor via Google Classroom.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
