What is the course about?
This course is for learners wanting some more guidance and practice with Swedish word order. You'll be given bitesize mini-lectures on 2 essential rules of Swedish word order before completing grammatical tasks in small groups and receiving corrective feedback.
What will we cover?
- the V2 rule in Swedish: this fundamental rule controls the placement of Swedish finite verbs in all sentences.
- the BIFF rule: this rule, introduced in beginner: module 3 and Level 2 courses at City Lit, controls the placement of adverbs (such as INTE, ALLTID, ALDRIG) in subclauses such as: Lars sa att han inte bor i Stockholm.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- understand the underlying essential rules controlling word order in Swedish
- confidently identify errors in basic word order and correct them
- understand basic grammatical terminology such as "finite verb", "adverb", "main clause" and "subclause".
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should be actively studying Swedish on either a Beginner or Level 2 course (or have equivalent experience). Learners on this course will ideally come with some frustrations regarding word order that have arisen through their use of the language in either classroom or real-world situations.
The course doesn't assume any prior knowledge of grammar. All terms will be clearly explained with simple examples. Use will also be make of visual representations of rules and colour-coding to help you identify and analyse Swedish sentences.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
- bitesize mini-lectures
- visual representations and aids
- small group work
- quizzes
After the session you will be given access to a bank of digital resources to help you continue your learning beyond the session.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Based on tutor's own material.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
