What is the course about?
To learn to interpret swing phrases at sight and to able to notate swing rhythms upon hearing.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
The rules of jazz swing phrasing and notation; recognition of phrasing; notation of jazz swing phrasing; use of dynamic and articulation markings; syncopation; dynamic rules concerning function of the phrase.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Read a swing rhythm and know at sight how it should sound.
Notate a swing rhythm from hearing.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You need to have a reasonable understanding of rhythm reading/notation and have an interest in big band/jazz music.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Listening to examples; singing and clapping rhythms; writing out rhythms and dictation.
You are expected to consolidate what we have covered in class to improve your skill and dexterity.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Have manuscript paper, a pencil and a rubber.
